A sweet little pincushion and the perfect excuse to dive into your scrap basket!
Little Patched Cabin Pincushion is a fun, quick-to-make project using my Patched and Stitched Cloth method and a traditional Log Cabin quilt block. And the best part? There are no rules about what shape your scraps need to be!
It’s the perfect project for using up all those precious little pieces you can’t bear to throw away — itty bitty scraps, funny triangle-shaped scraps, long skinny strips, chunky little pieces and even those cute selvedge scraps you’ve been saving. Just let your scraps guide you, stitch them together and see where they take you.
These little pincushions are quick and satisfying to make, making them lovely gifts for stitching friends, sewing buddies, teachers, mums, or anyone who appreciates a handmade treasure. Although I should warn you… they can become rather addictive to make! Once you start finding homes for all those little scraps, you might find yourself making a whole collection.
And why stop at a pincushion? Make a matching needle book to create a sweet little stitching set, or take the same Patched and Stitched Cloth log cabin idea and make a pouch, bag, cushion, mini quilt or wall hanging. There really are endless possibilities when you start playing with little pieces of fabric and letting them become something new.

What You Will Need
Good fabric cutting scissors that aren’t too big
Pins – I like to use Clover Applique Pins
Thread for stitching – to get invisible stitches like mine I used Bottom Line Thread in colour Silver. You can also use normal sewing cotton thread in a neutral colour, or if you want your stitches to be more visible you could use a 12wt thread like Wonderfil Spagetti or Fruitti or a couple of strands of Cotton floss.
Thread for edging – I used a perle 8 thread for the blanket stitch edging. You could also use perle 5 and in a solid or variegated colour.
Needle – to suit whichever thread you are using.
Piece of off-cut quilt batting – any size will do, you can make your pincushions square or rectangle, big or small. It’s a great way to use up those strips of batting cut away from a quilt.
Piece of fabric for the back – cut this to the same size as your batting. You could also use wool felt for the back
Stuffing – I like to use all of the itty bitty to small to use for anything else fabric scraps and threads for stuffing. You can also use toy polyfil stuffing, walnut shells and even pop in a little bit of dried lavender.
And of course you will need…..
…fabric scraps of all different shapes and sizes!
