I happened to stumble across the Roxy Sisters through my
good friend Bec of Sew.Be Curated when she shared a video on her YouTube
channel of the girls visiting her shop in Newcastle. My curiosity around these
two sisters and their enthusiasm for slow stitching led me to find their
channels and Instagram profiles upon which I quickly subscribed to and
followed.
In July I was able to meet Sarah, one half of the dynamic duo,
at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair, which was an absolute delight. Sarah even
purchased a few bits and pieces from me which have already made their way into
her latest Slow Stitching project Field Notes.
Being new to the Roxy Sisters Creations I was unsure about
what it was that these ladies hosted and so I sat down to watch the first video
of Volume 6 Field Notes. Here I finally learnt and realized that the sisters
hosted the most marvelous slow stitching sew along projects, and their latest
volume had me excited!
The Field Notes project is inspired by the book The Country
Diary of an Edwardian Lady by Edith Holden. This book had been on my radar and Wishlist
for some time, and this slow stitching project was all the motivation I needed
to jump onto Ebay and find a copy for myself. I ended up striking gold, finding
a listing for not one but three books, the Country Diary, The Nature Notes, The
Story of Edith herself, and as a bonus it came with a book of post cards, all
for $80.
Having made my purchase it was quickly apparent that I would
be participating in my very first Roxy Creations Stitch Along. Off I went,
skipping with glee to our home Library (a fancy way of calling our office/spare
room) upon which I began to pull out all the books that I thought would help
inspire me for this project, and I had quite a few!

When I watched the video explaining the Field Notes project, I recalled some fabrics that I had not long ago bought from Forage by Lisa Mattock. I came across these delightful fairy and nature inspired fabrics by a Germany Fabric company called Acufactum. Sweet prints with fairies and flowers, woodland animals and birds that were just delightful. I came away with a few pieces, not quite knowing what I would use them in, but knowing that I had to have them in my stash.
I pulled the fabrics out and instantly new that they belonged in my Field Notes journal project and they inspired my special take on the theme also. I have decided that my Field Notes project is going to take on a whimsical notion, and be an imaginary Field Notes journal all about Fairies and their environment.

My Mum had also bought some of these delightful fabrics, so I had a look at hers and she had one or two I hadn’t bought so she kindly cut some off for me to use in my project. I recently picked up these delightful strawberry and Woodland fabrics from Judy at Post Office Patchwork which I think are also perfect. For everything else I intend to raid my stash of fabrics, lace, trims, threads, scraps and vintage linens.

My next stop was Pinterest and Instagram for a bit of indulgent scrolling, looking for inspiration on Field Notes, journalling, and slow stitching. I got lost in a sea of pretty imagery and discovered a few new artists, makers and stitchers to follow…
